# Do you know that the best and strongest form of evidence to inform policy and practice comes from systematic reviews?
Course objective
This course aims to introduce participants to the methodology of systematic reviews. Participants will be exposed to the various stages involved in conducting a systematic review and will have the opportunity to gain practical experience of the tasks involved at mini workshops.
Specifically, at the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Describe the principles of systematic reviews
- Formulate a clear question for a systematic review
- Specify the eligibility criteria for a systematic review
- Develop a search strategy for a systematic review
- Prepare a quality appraisal and data extraction form for a systematic review
- Interpret the results of systematic reviews
- Critically appraise existing systematic reviews
- Conduct their own high quality systematic reviews
- Appreciate the role of systematic reviews in evidence-based practice
Course content
The course will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to evidence-based practice
- Identifying the need for a systematic review
- Formulating the question for a systematic review
- Determining the eligibility criteria
- Searching for primary studies - systematic literature search
- Selecting studies
- Data extraction
- Assessing the risk of bias
- Critical appraisal of qualitative studies
- Collecting and analyzing data
- Reporting systematic reviews
- Drawing conclusions from systematic reviews
Course delivery and course materials
The course takes a step-by-step approach to the tasks and methods involved in conducting a systematic review. A mixture of presentations and hands-on activities are used to introduce participants to major aspects of the review process. A course manual will be given to participants at the beginning of the week. Participants are encouraged to identify a topic for a systematic review that they can develop during hands-on sessions. The course will be facilitated by researchers who have extensive knowledge and several years of experience in the conduct of high-quality systematic reviews.
