The Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially cut the sod for the construction of a new office complex for the Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR). The new office complex, expected to be completed by July 2025, is part of the transition of BIRD into the Institute of Rural Development and Innovation Studies (IRDIS).
Vision and Purpose of IRDIS
During the sod-cutting ceremony, Dr. (Mrs.) Monica Addison, Director of BIRD, together with Prof. Dadson Awunyo-Vitor, Provost of CANR, and Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, presented the vision for the new institute. The purpose of IRDIS is to enhance rural development by bridging the gap between academic research and practical solutions for rural communities.
Legacy of BIRD
BIRD has been a distinguished research unit within CANR, with a mission to connect the university to rural communities through the transfer of innovations and services to improve quality of life. Its vision is to be a center of excellence in Africa, providing solutions to governments, NGOs, donors, and communities across Ghana and the West African sub-region.
Key Contributions of BIRD
Over the years, BIRD has established itself as a leader in rural development, demonstrating expertise in various areas. These include consultancy services, where it offers research and development planning; capacity building, which supports institutional and individual growth; gender and development initiatives, promoting inclusive development strategies; and environmental and entrepreneurial support, aimed at facilitating the growth of small and medium-scale industries. BIRD has collaborated with a diverse range of organizations, such as government ministries, international academic institutions, and NGOs, and has gained extensive experience across all regions of Ghana. Its interdisciplinary team is widely recognized for excellence in rural development and socio-economic advancement.
The Future with IRDIS
The establishment of IRDIS will build on BIRD’s robust foundation, promoting innovative approaches to rural development and expanding its impact in Ghana and beyond.
