The Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) is one of the foremost and leading research departments of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The mission of BIRD is to provide an interface between the university and rural communities. BIRD aims at transferring innovations and other services available at the university to promote rural development which will enhance the quality of life in rural areas. Read more

Our Activities

BIRD engages in multi-disciplinary consultancy and research on contemporary rural development issues aimed at providing a better understanding of how development policies and processes of social, economic and environmental change affect different groups and stakeholders in rural areas.  BIRD has played a fundamental role in the economic and social development in rural areas in Ghana over the past 18 years and our aim is to enhance the development efforts of governments, international development agencies, grassroots organizations, and private individuals.  BIRD is committed to working with international agencies, Government, and Non - Governmental Organizations (NGO's) to support institutional strengthening and capacity building at local, district and national levels.  In all these the directorate and staff of the Bureau are committed to a high standard of professional and technical output.  Read More
