Who we are

The Bureau of Integrated Rural Development (BIRD) is a research centre of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. Established in 1979, BIRD offers a comprehensive inter-disciplinary research, training, consultancy, and advisory service in rural development.

BIRD has both national and international reputation as one of the foremost University-based institutions for development with special expertise in rural development, rural enterprises development, natural resource management, project planning and management, and a good track record for training, capacity building and rural institutional development.

Bird-working-experience

Working experience in Ghana

BIRD has working experience in all the 16 Regions in Ghana and has thorough knowledge and excellent relationships with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country. 

BIRD is institutionally organized into three units, these include:

Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (EnSuD)

The unit's goal is to contribute to sustainable development, good governance, and environmental responsiveness through collaborative research and innovative solutions to environmental challenges and crises.

Gender, Social Change  and Livelihood Unit (GSCL)

The unit conducts research, analysis, and provides advisory services to individuals, organizations, and policymakers, aiming to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in livelihood development at various levels of governance.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Unit (MED)

The unit focuses on supporting monitoring, evaluation, and learning practices in various projects, programs, and initiatives and providing evidence-based recommendations for improved project implementation and outcomes.
